Me too!!

Yes, every parent goes through it. Kids throw tantrums when you instruct something which can’t be overlooked. We as parents want kids to be obedient because that’s something that makes them awesome individuals in life. All kids are different and so are their tastes, interests etc.

For example some kids love water, so they are always ready to take bath, some are scared of soap & water, it takes time to make them do it. Similarly, what can be easy for one parent to impart can be difficult for others, but in the long run we need to find the way out to make them listen.

Take a few steps to make kids listen to you and let’s see how it works –

1. Be Precise – Shorten your Instruction

When you ask your kid to do something, be precise. Don’t give a long lecture by speaking extra, just be focused on what you need to get done. For example, if you want your kid to comb their hair – Tell them to comb their hair, don’t create fuss and tell him XYZ combs neatly, you will damage your hair, I will cut it off. Though you can guide them once with how important it is for remaining neat & hygiene but every day – A big NO

Thus, make sure your instructions don’t lose their meaning and gets delivered to your kid efficiently so that he/she knows what has been asked.

2.  Be Polite – Don’t Yell

I know it’s easy to say but sometimes chances of losing our mind due to multiple reasons such as personal issues, work pressure or health reasons is possible. We, too, have to understand how our child has nothing to do with it, they are not responsible for any of our stress, in fact they enlighten our life with their presence.

So, whenever you instruct something be polite and gentle with your tone & actions. Rude behavior not only discourages them to follow instruction out of anger but also turns them rebellious.

3. Use Playful Ways – Avoid Negative Comments

Use Playful Ways & better statements like if you don’t do it, mummy will feel bad is better than saying if you don’t do it I will throw you away. Makes sense?

Negative comments made a bad impact on kids mind, and on the other hand playful way or organized statements helps them to do things with joy.

4. Be a Good Listener – Listen it

When you command something, and they don’t do that often, try talking with them, be a good listener. Try to see their point of view, no matter they are small, but sometimes they face something which we aren’t able to get from our side.

Active listening plays an important part. It requires hearing more than just words, it can be about hearing the hidden meaning behind the words and responding to it.

5. Give Age-Appropriate Instructions

I know someone who said to me – that her daughter shows no interest in writing, instead of instructing again and again, and she was curious to know if my daughter does the same. I was like Lol!! Your daughter is 2.5yrs & mine 4.5 yrs.

So, it’s always essential to know that if they are not listening, it might be not just they don’t want to but because they are yet to reach that age. Stop comparing them to XYZ & make their own milestones.
