Chess Olympiad 2022 – Let’s Uncover The Hype For You

The Chess Olympiad 2022 was launched with fanfare on July 28 at the Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, in the appearance of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and M.K. Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

Did you know that this is India’s first-ever chess Olympiad? 

Yes, it was originally scheduled to coincide with the World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk in 2019. It was then scheduled for August. It was, however, postponed due to an increase in Covid – 19 cases and due to the war between Ukraine and Russia. In addition, it was finally decided that the chess Olympiad 2022 will take place in India. 

The Chess Olympiad 2022, which began on July 29th and will end on August 9th in Chennai, India. It is the 44th FIDE-aligned Chess Olympiad.

The open section will feature 187 teams competing for the Hamilton Russell Cup, while the women’s section will feature 162 teams competing for the Vera Menchik Cup. Furthermore, the combined results of the countries in both sections will determine the winner of the 2022 Chess Olympiad. In the Open and Women’s sections, India will field three teams each. 

On Friday, Indian teams won with easy victories in the open and women’s sections of the 44th chess Olympiad. Three in the open and three in the women’s section won over their opponents. 

However, the 5th-time world champion and iconic Viswanathan Anand has opted not to play and has taken on the role of mentor this time. 

Where will the 44th Chess Olympiad be held?

The 44th Chess Olympiad will be held at the Four Points by Sheraton Mahabalipuram Resort and Convention Centre on Chennai’s East Coast Road.

FIDE Presidential Election

The tickets for the FIDE Presidential Election were distributed to the four candidates. The FIDE Electoral Commission approved these candidates. They were elected president and vice president. The following are their names:

1) Andrii Baryshpolets was chosen as the president & Peter Heine Nielsen as deputy president.

2) Inalbek Cheripov was chosen as the president & Lewis Ncube as deputy president

3) Arkady Dvorkovich was chosen as the president & Viswanathan Anand as deputy president.

4) Bachar Kouatly was chosen as the president & Ian Wilkinson as deputy president.

Tamil Nadu has unveiled a mascot called “Thambi.” It’s an intriguing mascot in which a chess knight is dressed in traditional Tamil male attire, with a white shirt and folding hands, welcoming all players to the Olympiad in Chennai.
